Raffaele Sollecito, the ex-boyfriend of Amanda Knox, has told reporters that he wasn't with Amanda the whole time on the evening that her housemate Meredith Kercher was murdered.
The pair had previously said they were together the whole time on November 1, 2009, but court papers say that phone records show they were not together until the latter part of the evening.
The couple were convicted of the murder in 2009 and spent four years in prison before being released on appeal. A retrial in January of this year found them guilty and Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
During a press conference on Tuesday, his lawyer said: ‘Raffaele, as you’ll all remember, has always maintained that he spent the night with Amanda, the night. That does not include the earlier part of the evening.’
It was during the January retrial that the court found that evidence from Knox’s mobile phone proved that the pair were not together for the whole evening. This caused concern for Sollecito, who had previously said he was with Amanda that evening, but apparently would like people to know he can’t be held accountable for events that could have taken place before they met up.
As previously reported, the court says Knox 'delivered the only mortal blow', stabbing Meredith with a kitchen knife in the house they shared. Knox is currently back in America.
