Since AirBnB burst onto the scene in 2008 it has majorly shaken up the way we travel, both here in the UK and abroad. Forget faffing with expensive hotels, AirBnB offers a home away from home experience, and often for a fraction of the price.

Now, the site is set to shake up the travel industry again. This week AirBnB announced their next step, the launch of AirBnB Trips. The idea is an extension of their original ethos to make travellers feel like locals, but this time via experiences as opposed to the place they bed down in.

With Trips, local people will be able to offer experiences, knowledge, or even just their social life to travellers.

“The whole idea is that you can immerse yourself in local communities. We bring places to life through the people who live there,” Brian Chesky, founder of AirBnB, told the BBC.

To ensure the experiences offered are genuine and worthwhile, AirBnB it taking a highly curated approach which involves rigorously reviewing host’s credentials and test-driving out the services they are offering.

Launching in 12 cities - London, Miami, Nairobi, Havana, Florence, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Detroit and Seoul, Paris and Cape Town - there are 500 experiences currently available.
