Earlier this week Conservative MPs voted against a proposal put forward by the Labour party to allow 3,000 child refugees to enter the UK from Europe. The plan put forward by Labour would actually have meant welcoming 600 unaccompanied child refugees a year over the next 5 years, as Patrick Kingsley, The Guardian’s Migration Correspondent, explains.
Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister, Keir Starmer, told Radio 4’s Today Programme that ‘the fight will go on’ to get the UK to do more to help children stranded in Europe. Monday’s vote was a close call, with the government narrowly defeating a cross-party amendment to the immigration bill.
MPs voted against the proposals by 294 to 276 on Monday after the Home Office persuaded any Tories who were thinking about rebelling against their party that enough was already being done to help such children.
A handful of Conservative MPs voted in favour of accepting the child refugees. They were: Geoffrey Cox, Tania Mathis, Stephen Phillips, Will Quince, and David Warburton.
Here is a full list of all the 294 MPs who voted not to accept the child refugees:
