If you rejoiced about the fact that Page 3 is now no more, you might want to stop in your tracks for a second. Not only has The Sun reinstated it for a lol, with a topless woman on Page 3 today, it issued this 'correction': 'Further to recent reports in all other media outlets, we would like to clarify that this is Page 3 and this is a picture of Nicole, 22, from Brournemouth.
'We would like to apologise on behalf of the print and broadcast journalists who have spent the last two days talking and writing about us.'
The temporary demise of Page 3 got mixed, but generally favourable 'well it's a step in the right direction now there aren't tits all over the opening pages of the UK's most-read newspaper' reactions - The Daily Star decided to take up the mantle, presumably in a bid to capitalise on sales.
Altering its masthead to include 'HOME OF THE PAGE 3 GIRL', and adding a whole new heart-shaped 'PAGE 3' logo, *The Daily Star *collated all the most popular Page 3 girls from the past with the header 'All your favourite girls - more fun than The Sun'.
On top of this, *Midweek Sport *have opted for the more subtle '70 TOPLESS BABES INSIDE THIS PAPER' to really hit home the fact that Page 3 has never really gone anywhere. Then again, one of the top stories in the paper is 'MAN BONKS GOAT', so what do you expect?
The reaction to the supposed end of the traditional Page 3 has been met with criticism not just from old guys who can't work a Google search, but from the girls who made it possible, like Page 3 model Rhian Sugden who said the decision was 'dictated by comfy shoe-wearing, no bra-wearing, man-haters'.
Jodie Marsh also chimed in: 'Telling girls they shouldn't do Page 3 is not being a feminist,' and that campaigners should focus on more serious issues such as FGM.
You've got to agree with the point that, considering the amount of weight behind the campaign to shut down topless girls at *The Sun, *and considering how quickly more Page 3 equivalents have sprung up as well as, y'know, the internet and stuff, was it really worth it?
As Katie Glass wrote for us yesterday, in her article 'Why I'll Be Mourning The End Of Page 3': 'I love page three mainly because I wish I’d been brave enough to do it. When I was 19 I hated my body. I was scared of what my sexuality meant. I was frightened of being called slutty or slaggy. But page three girls are my idols, they don’t give a damn'.
On the other hand, Daisy Buchanan wrote that it's a step in the right direction: 'One day, we will tell kids that pictures of breasts used to be published every day, and weird dudes would buy them and stare at them on buses - and they won’t believe us. That’s progress.'
Whatever your opinion, it looks like there's a long way to go before the end of nipples on our newspapers.
