The US currently regard Nutella as a ‘topping’ – something to serve with ice cream or on cakes. Whilst this is a use for the hazelnut spread, it is most commonly used like a jam, on toast (or straight from the jar with a spoon). Now, the FDA are calling for a public survey to correctly classify the popular chocolate snack in order to create an accurate daily intake allowance.
Ferrero, the company behind Nutella, have tried to have the classification changed numerous times. According to a survey done by the company in 2012, consumers are only using a single table spoon to spread on their toast (HAHAHAHA). By labelling Nutella as a jam, the serving size will be halved from two tablespoons to one (when everyone obviously actually eats a minimum of four per serving) and that it will then appeal more to calorie conscious people.
The public, however are convinced it’s neither and have taken to Twitter to declare it’s actually ‘a way of life’.
And a few strange people, like me, can’t understand why people love it so much…
The poll closes on the 3rd of January and will sum up the debate between Spread Vs. Topping, but we can’t wait that long, so we’re asking you…
What even is Nutella?
