Is Tinder Plus Worth It?

It’s happened to any wizened Tinder user. There you are, merrily swiping left as you sort through the litany of guys posing with their wives on their wedding day, ominous looking cock shots and men inexplicably draped over tigers when you hit the jackpot – a relatively attractive person who doesn’t display any immediately obvious signs of psychotic illness.

The only problem is, you’ve been so programmed into rejecting the barrage of nutjobs who live within a worryingly close radius of your home that you don’t swipe right, as you intended, but swipe left – an irreversible act of carelessness that means that you’ve digitally rejected Mr Hunky McDreamypants and your burgeoning romance will never have the chance to get off the ground.

It’s the danger of potentially skipping over The One that gives Tinder part of its butterfly-inducing appeal, but Tinder’s CEO and co-founder Sean Rad said that the rewind function was one of the most-requested functions made by Tinder users, which is one of the reasons it’s a primary function of Tinder Plus, the paid-for Tinder update which was launched by the company in March this year.

So now that we’ve had a couple of months to get used to the update, we’ve compiled a guide to Tinder Plus, so you can make an educated decision as to whether or not it’s worth parting with your cash (the price of a pint in most London venues*) in your quest to the right person for you, or just the person for right now. You can thank us later.

What is Tinder Plus?

Tinder Plus is a premium, paid-for addition to your existing Tinder app, which gives you access to two new features: Rewind and Passport.

Rewind lets you take back your last swipe and Passport allows you to change your location so you can drop a pin and connect with Tinder users anywhere else in the world – pretty handy if you’re going abroad and want to line up some dates for when you arrive (if this function appeals to you, you must be impressively organised and forward thinking and we salute you).

You’ll also get unlimited ‘yes’ swiping capabilities – more on this later.

How do I get Tinder Plus?

All you have to do to subscribe to Tinder Plus is tap the location button on the main screen and follow the instructions, putting in your payment details. Simples.

How much does Tinder Plus cost?

Tinder Plus costs £3.99 if you’re under 28, and £14.99 if you’re older. While it’s nice to see a company favouring young people for a change, we do think this smacks of ageism and limits the pool for anyone under 28 who’s looking to get with someone a bit older who can’t be bothered to pay the extra money. A bit cruel, by all accounts.

Is Tinder Plus worth it?

It depends on how appealing the Rewind and Passport functions are to you – the only real difference non-paying users will notice (maybe) is that they won’t be able to swipe ‘yes’ to an unlimited number of potential partners anymore. Quite how many times you’ll be able to swipe right is unclear because the number is based on an algorithm.

Apparently, the vast majority of users will never hit a barrier, so if the functions don’t seem worth it to you, we wouldn’t bother. And, more importantly, there’s no telling if the people you Rewind with will actually like you back in return – so be prepared to cope with the double rejection.

Can I cancel Tinder Plus?

You can cancel your Tinder Plus subscription at any time. Here are the directions from Tinder themselves:

Note: After cancelling your subscription, you’ll be able to use Tinder Plus for the remainder of the 30 days that you’ve already paid for. When your subscription expires, it will not be renewed. You can opt back in at any time. Cancelling your subscription will not retroactively refund subscription payments, and previously charged subscription fees cannot be pro-rated based on the cancellation date. Deleting the app and/or your account does not cancel your subscription.

Far from the assumption that Tinder Plus has made the number of users drop off, it looks like the opposite is the case, with more and more users joining the dating app every day. So there you have it! Let us know how you get on in the comments below.

*As a side note, what the hell is going on with drinks prices at the moment? I was recently charged £4.50 for a stubby little tin of Spanish lager from one of those venues in Shoreditch where everyone has American Traditional tattoos and no one looks like they’re having a good time. I can only assume the extra £3.50 I was charged covered the COMME des GARÇONS colognes and faint whiff of disdain that was being pumped from the air conditioning vents? It certainly wasn’t for the service.
