Imagine being told repeatedly, 'You look disgusting.' Or reading endless comments on social media saying that your face is 'so ugly.' For beauty blogger and film-maker Em Ford, 26, this abuse became her reality when she took the brave step of showing her (blemished) skin to her online followers.
Ems response? She turned the mirror on those abusing her with a three-minute-film about her makeup regime, accompanied by some of the comments posted by viewers. 'You Look Disgusting,' has had more than 11 million views on YouTube in its first week.
In this week's issue we talk to Em about her aim for the #YouLookDisgusting video. She said: "The film was never just about me. It's about thousands of women who receive these comments on a daily basis."
"A lot of people spend so long trying to get the perfect flawless picture, and I'm no different," she admits. But she says of her decision to show the before look too: "I wanted to show people that I suffer with acne. This is why my make-up is subtle and simple: it's what I have to do just to look the same as other people do when they wake up. Acne is common, it sucks, and this is how I make myself feel good."
