Giselle did it and pop singer Gwen Stefani followed suit, now it seems snaps of mums breastfeeding - being termed Brelfies – are all the rage.

The celeb mums might be credited with starting the trend for nursing their babies on social media but normal mums are following suit in solidarity against a backlash at breastfeeding in public and in an effort to make it more commonplace and ‘normal’. One in five mothers has taken 'brelfies' with even more planning to, according to a survey by Netmums.

Last year Facebook found itself in hot water after an image it removed of a mother breast feeding went viral when they decided it violated their nudity policy. Kaya Kwright was shocked when a picture of her breastfeeding her son Kayden in the bath was removed by Facebook.

after she shared the intimate picture in a closed social media group about breastfeeding. Facebook was later forced to back pedal and allow the image to be published after widespread outrage at their policies.

The Brelfie trend’s already divided opinion though, as you might expect, but if it helps some women feel more comfortable about breastfeeding that’s surely a good thing - especially given that the UK has one of the lowest breast feeding rates in Europe and that stigma around public feeding is a major deterrent to mums regularly asked to stop, or cover up in cafes.

Claridges found themselves in hot water after asking a new mum who was breastfeeding to cover up last year and angry mothers staged mass breastfeeding protest at Sports Direct store in Nottingham that asked a woman to leave because it was against 'company policy'

Hashtag Brelfie might have some competition as its claim to mean 'breastfeeding selfies' though- 'breakfast selfie', 'bride selfie', 'bread selfie', 'bathroom selfie' and 'braid selfie' all use the #brelfie too..yes really.
