It’s been a good few seasons (decades in fashion terms) since a pair of Daz-white Stan Smiths generated more cool than those six-inch frenemies gathering dust at the back of your shoe cupboard. So, it was about time that Barbie caught up. At 56, the controversially pristine 12-inch doll has finally been given her own pair of flat feet.

She now has adjustable ankles for the first time, allowing the plastic icon to slip into some stylish Nike kicks. To be fair, Barbie’s semi tip-toe has been one of life’s great mysteries, and just got plain ridiculous when she started working as a mechanic and a doctor.

This new flat-footed incarnation of Barbie comes courtesy of Mattel’s new ‘Fashionista’ range – the new line even features Barbie in a very covetable pink tweed trouser and trainer combo. Alexa Chung eat your heart out. And as well as flatforms, studded black sandals and knee-high gladiators, she’s been chanelling Alexander Wang’s sport-luxe with a cobalt blue sweater, and engaging in some print clashing that would make Proenza Schouler proud.

But fashion aside, Barbie’s new below-ankle look can only be a good thing – remember how last month women were banned from the Cannes red carpet for not wearing heels? B getting with the times is a step in the right direction.

Plus, it’s not just Barbie’s feet that are getting a realistic makeover. The range – made up of 23 dolls to be released throughout this year – will be more diverse than ever before. There are eight skin tones, 14 facial structures, 18 eye colours, 22 hair styles and 23 hair colours.
