Festive home decor goes down differently in every household, but according to etiquette expert and social commentator William Hanson, there’re a few Christmas decorations that most of us have in common that make us erm… common.
For those of you who don’t know, Hanson’s actually been on the scene for a quite a while, after somehow managing to establish himself as the go-to expert on anything to do with manners, etiquette and class.
In fact, some of you may remember him from the 2008 cycle of Australia’s Ladette to Lady show, in which he kindly offered his ‘expert’ opinion on how a bunch of women he’s never met should live their lives.
Now, the 28-year-old Bristol native is back this festive season (certainly not by popular demand), to tell us which decorations we should steer clear of this Christmas to avoid appearing ‘common.
Debrief Common Christmas Decorations
Door Wreaths
According to the lovely Mr. Hanson, door wreaths are the decorative equivalent to sprinkling glitter on a turd. The turd, in this case is your house.
Faux X-mas Trees
"Sophistication is genuine, so fake trees are never going to be sophisticated" Hanson told The Sun newspaper.Who knew saving the environment could be so low-brow.
Fairy Tree Toppers
The three wise men didn't follow a fairy to baby Jesus, they followed a star, so it seems that Hanson's festive beef with these little winged women is due to their historical inaccuracy. Interesting.
Coloured Christmas Lights
Apparently, its socially unacceptable and unbecoming of one to decorate their house with coloured Christmas lights. If you want to keep it classy this crimbo, go for all white lights and keep colour to an absolute minimum, because that's what fancy people do.
Tinsel
Tinsel is the "antichrist" to anybody with taste ,says Hanson. Everything from the look feel and SOUND of tinsel is wrong. That's right, even the Christmas staple tinsel counts as a 'common' decoration.
Time
But even if you do keep to all of Hanson's holiday decorating rules, your efforts could still be in vain if you put them up too early.Having any decorations hung before the 17th of December is apparently a tell-tale sign of your abhorrent classlessness. Those who wish to remain "socially desirable" must therefore take down any decor immediately to avoid the shame of appearing primitive and unrefined to your peers.
