Musically speaking, we haven’t heard much from Zayn Malik for a little while. There was that Taylor Swift collab, which was nice and all, but there hasn’t been much talk of new solo material since he released his debut album ‘Mind of Mine’ last year. And that feels like lifetime ago, doesn't it?
Dedicated Zayn fans (erm.. me) had been getting a bit antsy. But now we’ve been given a taste of what’s to come and we’re both excited and tiny bit confused. Why? Because there’s a blue poodle involved, and it’s chasing after a bone that is surely too big for it to carry in it's mouth.
Last night Zayn tweeted a little GIF. A little GIF with some music playing over the top of it. The music featured Zayn’s voice. You know that sultry falsetto thing he has going on? That 'watch me hit the high note' thing that without which, no One Direction song ever sounded the same? There’s a whole lot of that in this 28-second clip.
No, you’re not having a bad trip. That is indeed a green hand holding a bone with the word ‘EXCITED’ written across it while a tiny blue poodle chases after it. And if you’re in doubt about whether or not this is genuinely Zayn teasing new music, I reckon his subsequent tweets are enough confirmation to get excited about.
‘Lil taster …’, Zayn tweeted afterwards. ‘More to come’, he added. What. A. Tease.
Tone wise, the clip of music that Zayn shared isn’t as commercially pop-y as some of his previous hits, which is pretty exciting. And the reason might have something to do with the collaboration with AR Rahman (the composer behind the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack and the Pussycat Doll’s version of Jai Ho!).
Malay, a producer who has worked with Zayn, told Billboard last November: ‘We're talking about doing a song with him and A.R. Rahman together and I'm having Zayn in Urdu, it's real similar to Hindi but it's Pakistani language. It's a modern-sounding song, but for him to sing in that language is kind of powerful’. So, could this be the collaboration in question? Is this the start of the second album? What else is to come, Zayn? WHAT ELSE?!
