If there’s one thing to know about the Mercury Prize, it’s that it’ll give you a huge clue about which British artists are worth paying attention to. Yes, I know that's kind of the premise of most music awards ceremonies, but the Mercury has a bit of a reputation for (in its best years) propelling talent who were otherwise on the periphery of mainstream consciousness to the forefront of everyone's minds (and playlists). Of course, while being nominated is a huge indication of what the pros think is musically noteworthy at the moment, the biggest talking point is whose the album that wins at the end of it all. And this year the incredibly brilliant and extremely deserving Sampha took home the prize for ‘Process’.
