If there’s one way to our generation's attention, it’s to throw a hefty dollop of nostalgia at whatever you want them to look at. The proof? Well, pretty much the entirety of every sartorial and pop cultural reference of 2017 has come with a throwback hashtag attached to it, has it not?
**WATCH: How Much Time Do You Spend On Social Media? **
You've watched it and suddenly feel compelled to drop everything in favour of re-watching one of those crappy 'Best Of The 00's' playlists on YouTube. I've been there and procrastinated through that. But, while you're here, here are some of our favourite throwback reference points...
Missie Elliot's orange tinted sunglasses
**In Rina's video: **skip to 0.08
The throwback: Okay everyone who was anyone would be seen in various shades of tinted sunnies, but I always associate them with any and every Missie Elliot video appearance. As seen in this classic, right here.
Driving a sexy car with one hand and musing intently about life

**The throwback: **if there's anything I've learned from cool R&B music videos, it's that one can't possibly concentrate on the road, let alone use both hands, if you're truly thinking long and hard about the meaningful thing you're singing about.
The Motorola flip phone
In Rina's video: skip to 0.55
**The throwback: **I mean, almost every video that involved being on the phone. Because how can one be sassy without a lid to dramatically slap to signify the end of a conversation? No one does it quite like J Lo does in the 'All I Have' video. Evidence at 2.50 and yes, I'm a huge J Lo fan.
The sartorial homage to every TLC video ever
**In Rina's video: **skip to 1.29
The throwback: Namely when Rina, dressed in a crop, an oversized jacket, and shiny silver baggy trousers, does a jig or two with her backing dancers (dressed in matching-not-matching) outfits. Please see TLC - 'No Scrubs' video for original reference taking.
Literally dancing to whatever the lyrics say
**In Rina's video: **skip to 2.02
The throwback: Sing 'the phone' = stick out your thumb and pinky finger and pretend to be on the phone. Sing 'two' = put two fingers up. Sing 'you' = point to the screen. There was a period of time when Destiny's Child did that best. And that was in the Say My Name video.
