As Richard Osman recently said on The Rest is Entertainment podcast, ‘there is nothing the McFly boys can’t do. Every single time they turn their hand to anything, they absolutely nail it.’ As per usual, he’s right, and the McFly members seem have the golden touch.
Danny Jones recently won The Masked Singer and is currently appearing on I'm A Celebrity, Dougie Poynter was crowned the King of the Jungle on I’m a Celeb in 2011, the same year Harry Judd won Strictly Come Dancing. Although Tom Fletcher did not win Strictly, he is a number one bestselling children’s book author, so he also hasn’t done too shabby outside of the music world.
So what else are they all up to, aside from winning every reality show under the sun? Here’s all the info you need on the heartthrobs.
Tom Fletcher
Since McFly’s 2003 debut, 39-year-old Tom has racked up an impressive CV. He has become one of the UK’s bestselling authors for children and created the wildly popular Who’s in Your Book? picture-book series. The Dinosaur That Pooped picture-book series, co-written with his bandmate Dougie Poynter, have sold over a million copies.
Tom competed in series 19 of Strictly Come Dancing where he and his dance partner, Amy Dowden, came in 7th place. As well as writing McFly’s songs, Tom has also lent his talents to One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and The Vamps. He is also currently working on Paddington the Musical, which is scheduled to open in the UK in 2025.
He found love with blogger, podcaster, author and 2020's Queen of the Jungle, Giovanna Fletcher. The pair were childhood sweethearts, meeting at just 13 years old in the Sylvia Young Theatre School. The couple tied the knot in 2012— many fans will remember Tom’s viral wedding speech to the tune of All About You— and are now parents to sons Buzz, ten, Buddy, eight, and Max, six.
Dougie Poynter
Aside from playing bass in McFly, Dougie is kept busy with plenty of side-hustles. The 36-year-old has co-written multiple songs and books alongside bandmate Tom Fletcher and founded multiple clothing lines— although his skate clothing brand Zookie is now under different ownership and Saint Kidd and Polonius are no longer trading. He has modelled for various brands and maintains an interest in fashion.
He was crowned the King of the Jungle on I’m a Celeb back in 2011, a feat that his bandmate Danny Jones likely hopes to replicate this year.
Last year, Dougie opened up on Matt Willis’s podcast about his struggles with addiction, admitting that his Valium addiction left him unable to remember two whole years of his life and resulted in him checking himself into rehab in 2018. This led to the 2019 McFly reunion tour being postponed until Dougie was feeling up to it. The bassist also previously attended rehab in 2011 for an alcohol and cocaine addiction. On his rehab stints, he said, ‘Both times I felt like they were huge life-changing things, they were like the worst times in my life and the best… the second time was even worse, that was Valium, that was literally like hell on earth.’
Having previously been in relationships with The Saturdays’ Frankie Bridge and popstar Ellie Goulding, Dougie is currently rumoured to be dating actress Yasmeen Scott, but the pair have yet to confirm it officially. His previous girlfriend was model Maddy Elmer, who he split from at the beginning of 2022 after two and a half years together.
Danny Jones
Danny has been back on our tellies recently as he headed Down Under to compete in I’m a Celeb… Get Me Out of Here. He’s also fresh off a win for The Masked Singer where he performed as the Piranha. 38-year-old Danny has also been a judge on The Voice UK since last year, but previously judged The Voice Kids UK from 2017 to 2023.
McFly isn’t his only foray into music, he has also toured the UK as a DJ and produced tracks for the likes of One Direction. He also released a solo EP back in 2019 aptly named EP.
Danny is a father to his six-year-old son, Cooper, with his wife and former Miss England, Georgia Horsley. The pair tied the knot in 2014 but have been an item for 15 years. The pair previously opened up about a rocky patch in their relationship after their son was born. Georgia admitted, ‘I'd given birth five days before and he had to go back to work, so I was left home alone.’ However, the pair stuck it out and are still happily married.
Harry Judd
Last but not least, 38-year-old Harry has also been busy outside of his band work. The drummer put his rhythm to the test in Strictly Come Dancing in 2011 and was crowned the winner alongside his partner, Aliona Vilani. This was just a year after he had also won the Strictly Christmas Special with Ola Jordan. That isn't his only reality TV show credit, last year Harry and his mum Emma were runners up in the first series of Celebrity Race Across The World, narrowly beaten by Alex Beresford and his dad Noel. The musician is also a published author, and his first book, Get Fit Get Happy, was released in 2017.
Harry met his now-wife, violinist Izzy Johnson, when she appeared as part of the string section on McFly's 2005 concert tour. The pair tied the knot in 2012 and with thanks to IVF went on to welcome daughter Lola, seven, sons Kit, five, and three-year-old Lockie.
Why did McFly break up?
In 2016, after 13 years together, the band announced an 'indefinite hiatus' to focus on solo projects. Harry revealed, 'We were in the worst place we had been in the entire 13 years we'd known each other,' with Dougie admitting that cracks were forming and 'causing resentment.' Tom later confessed that their reasons for splitting up were 'stupid' and 'silly,' but thankfully for fans it didn't last a lifetime.
The band reformed in 2019 and announced that they were releasing an entire album of unreleased materials, and suddenly, all was right in the world again.
Sarah O'Byrne is a News and Entertainment writer for Grazia, and although she specialises in film and TV, her preteen self would be most happy that she gets to write about McFly.
