December’s here so it’s time to dust off your party shoes and head out in the cold to drink all the alcohol and forget what it’s like to not be hungover.
The Theatre That’s Not Panto
Because no-one likes panto really, do they? Not the ones Peter Andre ironically stars in and certainly not the ones that are meant to be new fashionable twists on old stories. Instead, focus your energies on a whole bunch of new ace plays that’ll feed your mind. Take Macbeth at London’s The Young Vic, for instance: it’s a dance version of the play with wild choreography that means even if you miss what’s going on with the Shakespearian language, there’s lots to keep you occupied. Even better, tickets start at just a tenner.
The Restaurants And Bars To Spend Your December At
Seeing as the going-out season has begun, it’d be rude not to oblige. If you’re in London, head for Coin Laundry, the new bar and restaurant in Exmouth Market that’s really into its chicken kievs (not a bad thing) and pinball. If you’re in Brighton, then head to Londoners’ fave Polpo, which has just opened in your neck of the woods – it might not take bookings but the (affordable!) food is worth waiting for. If it’s drinks you’re after, head to Noble Rot in Bloomsbury for wine, wine, more wine and open fires.
The Gigs To Go To
Prince’s best mate Lianne La Havas is back on tour with her album Blood and she’s trucking her way aroung the UK throughout December. Check her out in Birmginham on Friday, Bournemouth on Saturday and Cambridge on Sunday. Tickets are £17.50. Or head to see the very excellent Shura, who’s also on tour. She’s playing Glasgow on Saturday and Leeds on Sunday. Tickets are £13.25.
The Art Fair That’s Actually Fun
The London Illustration Fair is only a fiver to get into and it’s full of people touting stuff you certainly won’t see all over Not On The High Street and your Aunty Mabel’s walls. Get yourself some postcards and pick up a print for mum for Christmas while you’re there.
