Who’s that? Brody Dalle, her debut solo album dropped this week.
She looks kind of familiar… Yeah, did you have an alt phase in high school too?Brody used to be in The Distillers. Albeit with black hair.
Oh yes. Year 10 personified. I went to Reading Festival with a day pass, drank loads of coca cola, moshed like an idiot, got picked up by my mum at 9PM and fell asleep on the car journey home. Good for you.
She’s had a bit of a turbulent life no? Yeah, she’s pretty amazing. She suffered an abusive childhood, married the frontman of Rancid when she was 18, got addicted (and then clean) from crystal meth, divorced her husband, married Josh Homme then had two kids all while fronting two very successful bands - The Distillers and Spinnerette.
So why’s Brody Dalle back now? She’s brought out her first solo album. It’s called Diploid Love. She’s written it for ‘kids everywhere who are bullied for being different.’
Cool! What’s it like? Excellent. It’s less heavy than The Distillers stuff, and it gives Brody’s excellent voice a chance to shine. Brody’s clearly got an top bunch of friends too – it features collaborations with Shirley Mansion and Emily Kokal of Warpaint. The album’s also got an excellently named song on it called Meet The Foetus that’s about her kids Orrin and Camille.
Tell us a fun fact. Brody Dalle's half sister is Morgana Robinson – of the Morgana Show. The two met at a Distillers show backstage at Brixton Academy when Brody was 25.
