Why Today Has Been Dubbed ‘Divorce Monday’

If you're finding your marriage is a bit strained at the moment, know you are not alone.

The first working Monday of the year has been dubbed 'Divorce Monday', the day where more married couples look into divorce than any other day of the year.

A survey conducted by law firm Slater and Gordon found recently that a key cause of for break-up isn't infidelity or falling out of love, but in fact, money worries. Indeed, money worries are responsible for the separation of one in ten marriages.

As the BBC reported, 37% of the survey's 2,000 respondents said finances were the greatest problem in their relationship, whilst 22% said the majority of their arguments revolved around money.

But why this Monday – the first back after the wonderful holiday of Christmas?

Well, for some couples – with all the cash splashed on those presents – it wasn't so wonderful. The pressures of Christmas can weigh heavily on an already strained relationship. and then add into the mix the 'New Year, New You' mentality of January and well, this time of year starts to make sense.

Alarmingly the Office of National Statistics have reported that 42% of all marriages end in divorce – which is well on its way to being half.

It makes for grim reading, doesn't it?
