Time Magazine’s list of The 100 Most Influential People is one of our favourite things. Where else would you see Pope Francis alongside Alessandro Michelle and Margaret Atwood?
Split into five categories — pioneers, artists, leaders, titans and icons, the honourees from all industries are chosen for their, well, influence over the past year. They are recognised for changing the world, regardless of whether the consequences are seen as positive or negative.
So, who stands out on this year’s list?
From film, there’s Emma Stone for her contribution to film — unsurprising given her Oscar-winning role in La La Land — Ryan Reynolds for being ‘real’, Margot Robbie for being ‘like no-one else’, Viola Davis for being an all-round inspiration, Riz Ahmed and Donald Glover. Sarah Paulson, who played Marcia Clark in The People v. OJ Simpson, is also on the list.
Representing music, there’s John Legend, Ed Sheeran (shock), Alicia Keys and Chance The Rapper.
As well as the Gucci creative director Alessandro Michelle, from the fashion crowd there’s Raf Simmons, current chief creative officer at Calvin Klein, and plus-size model and body activist Ashley Graham.
We all remember Simone Biles’ incredible performance at the Olympics — and it earned her a place on the TIME 100, alongside sportsmen Neymar and Tom Hardy, the Quarterback and husband of Gisele Bunchen who was responsible for the New England Patriot’s Super Bowl comeback in March.
RuPaul, of the fabulous RuPaul’s Drag Race, gets a shout-out for bringing drag to the mainstream audience. And, after Snapchat was valued at $28 billion in early 2017, founder Evan Spiegel — who’s incidentally engaged to Miranda Kerr — also made the list.
The Trump family feature heavily, unsurprisingly, with Donald, Ivanka and Ivanka’s husband Jared Kushner noted. Other political figures include Theresa May, Julian Assange, Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin.
Sadly Barack Obama didn’t make the cut, despite holding the record for being listed most times at 11. We miss you, Barack.
