Sue Gray's initial findings from her investigation into the Downing Street lockdown parties have finally been published. The civil servant criticised the 'serious failure' of 'not just the high standards expected of those working at the heart of the Government but also of the standards expected of the entire British population at the time.'
Of the 16 events Gray looked into, 12 are now being investigated by the Met Police, including a gathering on November 13 2020 - the night Prime Minister Boris Johnson's former aides Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain left their roles.
Met intervention means much of the public version of the report has been redacted. Boris Johnson was able to repeatedly avoid answering questions about it when he faced MPs in Parliament, because the police have not yet completed their investigation.
But he did not avoid scrutiny. Former Tory PM Theresa May spoke with a freezing-cold bluntness as she said in the Commons: 'Either my right honourable friend had not read the rules or didn’t understand what they meant - and others around him - or they didn’t think the rules applied to Number 10. Which was it?'
Meanwhile, the SNP's Ian Blackford went full rebel and refused to retract his comment that Johnson had 'misled Parliament'. 'It's not my fault if the Prime Minister can't be trusted to tell the truth,' he bellowed, as the Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle asked for him to be marched out of the chamber by men with swords.
As one user pointed out on Twitter, the scenes could have been straight out of a HBO drama. And, while potential Government dishonesty and hypocrisy is far from funny, the jokes and memes people made online helped us laugh in the face of the horror and chaos.
