In uncertain times, any extra cash is welcome. And, if you’re paying off your student loan, then good news: you might just be owed some, as the government is holding on to more than £28 million in student loan overpayments.

While people have been able to claim the money from the Student Loans Company for a couple of years, over the past two weeks people have been sharing more and more success stories, thanks to articles and the word spreading on social media. Sounds too good to be true? In case you don’t believe us, our Celebrity Director Guy Pewsey won back £300.

If you think you might have made an overpayment, you need to call the SLC repayment team on 0300 100 0611 and ask if you have made any repayments.

Then, you will need to give your Student Finance number. (The first person to post their story on the Reddit thread said: ‘Mash the keypad repeatedly if you don't have your number then you'll get through to an operator who can verify you other ways [such as your payroll number, bank details, or a PAYE reference].’)

And then, ta da, you can then choose to have this money paid back to you directly or you can put it towards your existing loan if you have one. Good luck!
