When Donald Trump's first official state visit to the UK was delayed, there was a lot of speculation as to why. Brexit turmoil and fears of protests were initially blamed, yet he made his 'working visit' nonetheless last year. Now he has been officially welcomed by the Queen – and, as he spends time in London with the Royal family this week, their reactions to his presence are giving a lot of insight, perhaps, into why the UK refused to officially host him for so long.
The clues are subtle, given that they have to you know, be gracious and polite to a fellow world leader. But look closely enough and it's hard not to see some shade. From the Queen's telling jewellery choice - her token move - to Prince Harry's blatant avoidance of the US President, here are all the clues into how the Royal family really feel about Donald Trump's state visit...
Royal Reaction To Donald Trumps State Visit - Grazia (stacked)
Prince Harry kept an awkward distance from the US President during the state dinner, with his face truly saying it all. Trump dubbed Meghan Markle 'nasty' Before his state visit to the UK, and even more than that reports have since surfaced of him making derogatory comments about Princess Diana. Telling Howard Stern that he 'could have' slept with Diana, but only if she had an HIV test, it's unsurprising Harry was less than enthused to spend time with someone who had been so vile about his wife and mother.
Is it just us, or is this the face of a woman perfecting her fake smile for the evening? Given that Trump once victim-blamed Kate when her privacy was violated while she sunbathed topless on holiday, it's a miracle she even managed to keep up this polite smile. 'Who wouldn't take Kate's picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on Kate!' Trump tweeted in 2012, and he hasn't even had the good grace to delete it.
Arriving at the state dinner with gritted teeth, Prince William too looked uncomfortable meeting the US President. Similarly to Harry, the man has insulted both his wife and mother, so there's no doubt the air was filled with apprehension.
Giving possibly the best side-eye of all time, Prince Charles let his true feelings show during the ceremonial welcome of Trump and his wife, Melania.
Camilla was similarly unimpressed welcoming Trump to the UK, both her and her husband having matching scowls during the ceremony.
The look of every woman when forced to engage in conversation with a sexist man, the Queen let her polite smile slip during this close interaction with the President. In fact, she seems to sport the same look whenever Trump speaks...
Case en point.
Who can't relate to the desperate need for a swift drink when having to sit next to the biggest tool in the room during a dinner party? It wasn't just her solemn expressions either that gave away her true feelings about Trump.
Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, like many of the Royals made her feelings very clear on the car ride over. Her steely expression is reminiscent of that 'i'd so much rather be binging Netflix right now' feeling we all get on the way to plans we wish we'd cancelled.
Alexandra was all pursed lips entering the state dinner with Trump. Perhaps that's because she was also entering alongside William Hague, but the combination of both him and Trump would give anyone RBF.
So he might not be officially royal, but Larry the cat's reaction is truly deserving of a crown. Since anti-Trump demonstrators couldn't stop Trump's car from leaving Downing Street, Larry perched himself right under the wheel, forming his own little blockade. Long Live Larry
