Donald Trump arrives in the UK today for London’s NATO Summit, where he will be hosted by the Queen for a special reception. While Kate Middleton, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles are all required to be there, Prince Harry, Prince William and Meghan Markle have all managed to skip the event.
According to People magazine, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still taking ‘much-need family time’ after a stressful year. ‘The Duke and Duchess have a full schedule of engagements and commitments until mid-November, after which they will be taking some much-needed family time,’ a source told the publication.
Prince William, on the other hand, is currently on a royal tour of the Middle East. He’s travelling without his family across Oman and Kuwait, not returning to the UK for another three days.
So, since they’re all booked and busy, they get a free pass from meeting the US president – something Meghan Markle has managed to escape ever since that historic Deal or No Deal encounter. While William and Harry did meet Trump back in June – cut to Harry looking incredibly awkward – Markle has not met him yet as a Duchess. It’s understandable, of course, not just because he’s Donald Trump but also since he did call her ‘nasty’ earlier this year.
Trump landed in London last night for a three-day visit, primarily to attend the 70th anniversary of NATO in Watford on Wednesday. He is also due to have separate meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He will also have a working lunch with representatives from Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Bulgaria and the UK.
Currently, there are no clear plans for the US president to have a one-on-one with Boris Johnson – which would be highly contentious given the newly-released documents that show UK-US talks about trade and the health service post-Brexit. Johnson has denied any such conversation is happening.
Since Trump’s last two UK visits caused major protests, more demonstrations are expected to take place over the course of his stay this week.
