It's no secret that Meghan Markle has a huge fan base (Is she the only woman with a millions-strong following that can't actually be measured on Instagram? It's a case for the FBI). In fact, such is her influence that her fans are now donating thousands of pounds to charities that the Duchess of Sussex supports, via the power of social media (even though Meghan doesn't have any accounts on it anymore).
The much-circulated #globalsussexbabyshower hashtag has been set up so that fans of Meghan can show their support for the Duchess as her due date approaches. According to Meghan, the couple will be welcoming their baby on the cusp of late April/early May and obviously we are now all on tenterhooks for the whole of April...
The innovative idea of a social media 'baby shower', which is possibly the first one to exist, was started by a Twitter fan account for Meghan, encouraging social media users to celebrate the upcoming birth of the couple's baby by donating to Meghan and/or Harry's charities and launching on Sunday for Mother's Day (31st of March). Since then, the charities receiving donations (among them, Mayhew and Well Child) have said that they've been inundated with support, and received thousands of pounds in donations.
Meanwhile CAMFED, a campaign for female education, tweeted that they were 'floored' by the support they have received via the hashtag.
We still don't know whether Meghan and Harry will be welcoming a boy or a girl - the couple have chosen to keep it as a surprise - although bookies are now taking bets on possible names, with Victoria, Isabella and James leading with the best odds, also high on the list are Diana, Edward and Alice.
With baby Sussex set to be a thoroughly modern addition to the royal family - vegan gender-neutral nursery paint included - could anything be more fitting than a hashtag-based 'baby shower' campaign donating to the charities that Meghan and Prince Harry support?
