Leonardo DiCaprio shared two photos of himself with 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg on Instagram yesterday. Both DiCaprio and Thunberg are invested in helping ‘guarantee that future generations can enjoy the same livable planet that we have so clearly taken for granted,’ he said in a caption.
DiCaprio has long been vocal about his thoughts on climate change and in 1998 set up his own charity, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, to actively contribute to the cause. He famously addressed the issue in his 2016 Oscar acceptance speech for best actor, saying ‘Climate change is real. It is happening right now, it is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.’
Thunberg recently attended a climate action rally in Los Angeles, where she addressed the issue of the wildfires that are raging in California. She said, ‘Right now we are living in the beginning of a climate and ecological breakdown, and we cannot look away from this crisis anymore.’
DiCaprio continued on Instagram: ‘I hope that Greta’s message is a wake-up call to world leaders everywhere that the time for inaction is over. It was an honor to spend time with Greta. She and I have made a commitment to support one another, in hopes of securing a brighter future for our planet.’
Meanwhile, Hollywood legend Jane Fonda has spoken in support of Thunberg, too. ‘She understands that if she's attacked it's because she's making a difference and that scares people,’ Fonda told the BBC.
