Did Kate Middleton’s Waist Size Really Need To Be Discussed On Good Morning Britain?

Richard Madeley commented that Kate had a 'tiny, tiny waist' after she appeared at the Earthshot Awards, an event celebrating those trying to make a positive change for the environment.

Richard Madeley is facing backlash, for comments he made about Kate Middleton yesterday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge{ =nofollow}appeared at the Earthshot award on Sunday, a scheme set up by William and David Attenborough to recognise those making an effort to help the environment. The awards recognised five people, under the categories 'nature', 'air cleanliness', 'ocean revival', 'waste-free living', and 'climate action', inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It will be held each year until 2030.

But yesterday, speaking on Good Morning Britain, instead of discussing a news item about the awards and climate change - literally one of the most urgent and pressing issues of our time - host Richard Madeley decided to mention Kate's appearance. Namely how 'slim' she looked.

'She’s so slim isn’t she, Kate,' Richard said, to which co-host Susannah Reid replied, 'She is, isn't she?' He responded to that with: 'Tiny, tiny waist.' And Susannah added: 'She looks absolutely terrific.'

Yes, Kate does look terrific - but this isn't because she's what they consider 'slim.' The narrative that skinny = good is never helpful, but it's especially harmful on a show with millions of viewers, some of whom could either be impressionable, or already struggling with their weight. (Beat estimates that 1.25million UK residents are living with an eating disorder.)

And also, let's be honest, it's just plain inappropriate for a man to comment on a woman's size - regardless of the fact it's on telly.

The sad truth is, no matter how weird/inappropriate it was, there's more important things to be commenting on - like the cause Kate was trying to draw attention to. At the moment, there's more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere than any other time in human history and sea levels are rising faster than ever before. With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference happening at the end of this month, that's where all of our attention really needs to be. Certainly not on the size of a woman's waist.
