Hillary Clinton says that the 'gutsiest' thing she's ever done was choosing to stay in her marriage to Bill after the revelation that he had cheated on her with 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky - which led to an unsuccessful impeachment and was pretty much the biggest news story of 1998.
'I think the gutsiest thing I’ve ever done, personally, was to stay in my marriage,' she told Amy Robach during an interview with Good Morning America. She appeared on the show with her daughter Chelsea, to promote their new book, The Book of Gutsy Women, which they wrote together.
Clinton has commented on her marriage publicly before, writing in her 2017 book What Happened: 'There were times that I was deeply unsure about whether our marriage could or should survive. But on those days, I asked myself the questions that mattered to me: Do I still love him? And can I still be in this marriage without becoming unrecognizable to myself -- twisted by anger, resentment, or remoteness? The answers were always yes.'
During the Good Morning America interview, Hillary and Bill's daughter Chelsea didn't comment on her father's cheating, but looked impassive while her mother talked about her experience.
Critics have responded to the comments on social media, pointing out that her husband was in an extremely powerful position when he had sexual contact with Monica Lewinsky, questioning his actions in the context of the Me Too movement.
Other responses were mixed – there are those who agree that Hillary was brave to stay in a marriage that had been rocked by infidelity, and those who claim it would have been far 'gutsier' to leave him.
Hillary and Chelsea's book, The Book of Gutsy Women, tells the story of brave women who inspire them both, and is out now.
