Breathe. Calm. Are you sitting down? Ok, so – Lizzie McGuire, much-beloved Disney tween played by Hilary Duff in the noughties, is getting a reprise. This time, though, she’s all grown up: Duff will take on the titular role again, but now Lizzie’s living in New York. She’s thirty, a millennial trying to navigate the Big City and the trials of adulting in 2019 (aren’t you?)
Last time we saw Lizzie, it was in the hazy days of 2001-2004 when the original series ran for two seasons. It followed the 13-year-old as she dreamt of being popular, surfing the choppy adolescent waters of friendship, family and school while a cartoon version of Lizzie popped up to voice her real feelings. At Disney Plus’s D23 Expo in August, Hilary took to the stage to drop a few more tantalising hints: ‘Lizzie has also grown up, she’s older, she's wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget… She has her dream job, the perfect life right now working as an apprentice to a fancy New York City decorator’. The series’ signature dramatic device will return along with Hilary Duff (I’d like to imagine the cartoon popping up to say things like ‘$4 for a flat white?’ or ‘I WAS ONLY TRYING TO APPEAR ALLURINGLY REMOTE’), though we’d expect no less from original creator Terri Minksy who’s back on board to steer his brainchild into a new decade.
Excitingly now, the actress has revealed even more details - which make the series sound like it's going to be seriously relatable for anyone of a similar age. 'She's 30 and she's not in a marriage and she's not having a baby and she's not doing all the things that I have already done in my life,' she told E!. 'I think to myself, where can we go? What are the struggles of a 30-year-old right now? What are the pressures that life throws in front of a woman who is 30 and doesn't have all the things yet? And for me, that's Lizzie McGuire, she had those struggles in middle school where she didn't have a place where she fits in... but she's also your best friend, and that's exactly what I want to target and hit home again — is being there for girls in this time of their life.'
In a world of reboots, this is one we can get behind. Noughties kids online have lost their mind – @Becklarr17 tweeted ‘Waking up to hearing Lizzie McGuire is getting a reboot with Hilary Duff just made my whole life’, @LenaBlietz wrote ‘LIZZIE. MCGUIRE. IS. COMING. BACK. i am screaming. this is the best news.’ And Lizzie (sorry, Hilary) herself sounds as thrilled as any of us - 'I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl ...and into her 30’s.' Oh, and Hollywood’s great and good are as excited as we are. Meghan Trainor commented ‘OH. MY. GOD. YES.’. Jimmy Fallon wrote ‘I cannot wait for this.’ Ashley Tisdale noted ‘Lizzie is so on trend still...that tie dye shirt! #littlemoon’. Colour us thrilled – and speaking of trends, I’m off to dig out my butterfly clips.
