It's a selfie with which we’re all familiar: a beaming bride-to-be, newly acquired ring sparkling on her finger – the classic engagement announcement we tend to see a lot of at this time of year. But when Emma Stone announced her engagement last week, it started the countdown to one of the most A-list weddings of 2020.
Emma – the Oscar-winning star of La La Land – has been dating Dave McCary, a segment director on US comedy show Saturday Night Live, since 2017. Their romance has been more low-key than some – they rarely attend red-carpet events together, although Dave was her plus-one to the Oscars – and Grazia understands that Emma is hoping to keep the ceremony similarly private. So much so that she has already consulted close friend Jennifer Lawrence.
‘Jen has given her a huge amount of advice,’ a source tells Grazia. ‘She really values having Jen guide her through it – as she was so impressed with how Jen’s day turned out.’ Jennifer married her partner, gallerist Cooke Maroney, in October. Guests including Adele, Sienna Miller and Kris Jenner were photographed arriving, but it was otherwise a clandestine event, with few details reported in the media. Emma is keen to replicate it. The source adds of Jen: ‘She has shared lots of tips and tricks she used when it came to location hunting under aliases, getting venues through recommendations and skipping wait lists.’ Emma and Jennifer are firm friends, having been introduced by actor Woody Harrelson, and have described in the past how Jen supported Emma through the attention that comes with winning a Best Actress Oscar (Jennifer won in 2012, Emma in 2016).
For Emma and Dave, though, the chief concern is their wedding’s impact on the environment. Emma is a vegan and Dave a vegetarian. ‘The big thing between the two of them is trying to not leave a massive carbon footprint,’ an insider explains. ‘They’re all about vacationing at eco-resorts, travelling by bikes and growing their own food, and that’s going to extend to their own wedding.’
No dates have been pencilled in as yet – although a source says, ‘It will not be a long engagement.’ At this point, no arrangements are thought to have been made regarding the dress, but Emma is the face of Louis Vuitton and may call upon the brand to design a one-of-a-kind gown – as fellow LV ambassador-turned-bride, Game Of Thrones’ Sophie Turner, did recently. Guests are sure to include A-listers suchas Taylor Swift, Adele, Brie Larson, Steve Carell, Ryan Reynolds, Ellen DeGeneres, and perhaps even Olivia Colman, who starred with Emma in The Favourite.
‘The proposal wasn’t over-the-top by any means, but Dave was extremely romantic and had a beautiful speech prepared,’ a source explains. Emma’s pearl ring was bought by Dave from stylish New York jeweller Catbird, a favourite of the Duchess of Sussex, and retails at £3,600. ‘Emma is walking on air,’ say close friends. Come 2020, the planning will begin in earnest and half of Hollywood will be keeping a keen eye on their mailboxes.
