‘He is literally not okay lmao,’ wrote 15-year-old Claudia Conway on TikTok yesterday in response to a comment about Donald Trump supposedly recovering from coronavirus within three days. And in the most Gen-Z news report of all time, the world read: Donald Trump is lying about his battle with Covid-19.
Claudia, the daughter of Trump’s former counsellor Kellyanne Conway, has been breaking news from the White House for some time now. It was only two months ago her mother left her job at the Presidents side to focus on her family, after Claudia’s TikTok’s condemning her mother’s political affiliations first began going viral and started a very public family feud.
Now, after Donald Trump tweeted that he was leaving hospital and ‘feel better than I did 10 years ago,’ she’s claiming that Trump is downplaying how severe his symptoms are. ‘Guys lmao he is not “doing better”,’ she wrote in the comments of a TikTok video about Trump’s latest statement. ‘He is so ridiculous. Apparently he is doing badly lol and they are doing what they can to stabilize him.’
She also announced that Kellyanne had tested positive and she did a day later, after her mother attended an event with the president last week where masks and social distancing where all but non-existent. Publicly angry with her mother’s behaviour, it seems to have reignited said family feud after Claudia’s most recent video featured her mum in the background ordering her to clarify when she was tested.
‘Little clarification from my previous posts,’ Claudia wrote on the screen while filming her face as her mother spoke to her. ‘My mother claims she did not lie to me. She had three tests done. First negative, second two positive, we were not in communication. I misinterpreted it.’
Kellyanne can be heard in the background saying ‘do it now, say “correction my mum had three tests”, right now.’ It comes after Claudia claimed her mum lied about testing positive to her.
But the most interesting part of all of this isn’t necessarily the dodgy dynamics within the Conway household, it’s how glued the world has become to a 15-year-old's Tik Tk for alternative White House updates. Every time Claudia posts a video about her mothers work, she trends on Twitter and makes global headlines. And in a world of fake (and 'fake') news and choreographed press moments, we have no idea if what Claudia Conway is putting out on Tik Tok has a closer relationship to the truth than the official White House briefings.
‘Give Claudia Conway the Pulitzer,’ one social media user tweeted to near 30,000 likes. ‘We’re going to find out he’s dead from Claudia Conway aren’t we?’ writer Zack Bornstein posted to 15,000 likes.’
‘Claudia Conway is the supreme whistle-blower of our time,’ another added alongside a deleted video of Kellyanne shouting at Claudia for posting about her.
And as Twitter dives into debate about the role of a teenager in White House public relations, the rest of us are lamenting how we got to a point where trust is so low in politics we patiently wait for updates from a former Trump aides daughter to truly understand what’s going on in the White House.
