Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus. The prime minister confirmed his diagnosis on Twitter, saying he has mild symptoms such as a temperature and a persistent cough.
'Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus,' he wrote. 'I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus. Together we will beat this. #StayHomeSaveLives.'
A Downing Street spokeswoman said, 'After experiencing mild symptoms yesterday, the Prime Minister was tested for coronavirus on the personal advice of England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty. The test was carried out in No 10 by NHS staff and the result of the test was positive. In keeping with the guidance, the Prime Minister is self-isolating in Downing Street. He is continuing to lead the government’s response to coronavirus.'
The health secretary Matt Hancock has also tested positive for the virus. He tweeted, 'Following medical advice, I was advised to test for #Coronavirus. I‘ve tested positive. Thankfully my symptoms are mild and I’m working from home & self-isolating. Vital we follow the advice to protect our NHS & save lives.'
It was revealed on Wednesday that Prince Charles had tested positive for the virus. ‘He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual,' a spokesperson for Clarence House confirmed.
The spokesperson added that he is now self-isolating with Camilla, who does not have the virus. ‘The Duchess of Cornwall has also been tested but does not have the virus. In accordance with Government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland,' they added.
