Sky Atlantic’s new big thing starts tonight. And it’s pretty great. Here’s what you need to know before you watch it.
What’s this then?: It’s the new HBO detective series that’s starting on Sky Atlantic tonight.
Who’s in it?: Drum roll please... Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey – further proof if needed that the small screen is in fact, the new big screen.
What’s it about?: Detectives, funnily enough. Woody and Matthew (Matt? Would he let us call him Matt?) star as Louisiana lawmen who hunt a serial killer over the course of 17 years.
17 years? That’s a long old time to be on the lookout for someone: Yep. You betcha. The story's told 17 years apart too through a series of police interviews in the present day, and flashbacks to 1995.
And what are the characters like?: Interestingly from the guy who makes a living out of playing loose canons; Woody Harrelson plays the character that seems like the more sane of the two. He’s got a family (wife played by Michelle Monaghan) and seems more practical than his partner. Matthew McConaughey however, seems fond of spouting nihilistic sentiments and harbouring deep-rooted pain over past incidents.
So is it any good?: The first episode alone has got us hooked. So far it we’ve got satanic murders, prostitutes, generations-old secrets that need uncovering and two main characters we can’t wait to find out more about. It’s already picked up sterling reviews in America (where they’re already on episode 5, the bastards).
True Detective starts tonight (22nd) on Sky Atlantic
