It’s Halloween aka the only time of year that even the fancy dress haters feel slightly more comfortable putting on something other than their club uniform of fancy jogging bottoms, vest and whatever pair of trainers they don’t mind ruining this week. So expect plenty of witches, werewolves and sexy… things (FYI this bar is running an ‘I’m a mouse… DUH Mean Girls party) as you head out this weekend to one of the many, many nights that are on. Our picks include hip-hop at Livin Proof’s ‘Dead or Alive’ party in South London, Teki Latex at La Cheetah Club in Glasgow and Halloween at the Mill in Leeds featuring Scuba, Jackmaster and a live set from Ten Walls in Leeds.

**The Gigs To Get You Going

K*iss Haunted House Party @ Hammersmith Apollo, London

***Oct 31

****Simple Things Festival @ Various Venues, Glasgow

*Nov 1

*******Illuminations Festival, Various Venues, London

**********Oct 31

Worth going along to this super-pop all nighter for chart hits and to see how the hell KISS FM manage to make Rizzle Kicks, Clean Bandit and Gorgon City even mildly terrifying. They say it’s going to be an off the scale Halloween Party, with killer costumes, mind blowing special effects and a unforgettable party vibe “whether you’re channelling a bewitching Katy Perry” (REALLY? Is that a legit costume now) or want to hit the town dressed as a vampire”. If that’s not for you try Simple Things festival in Glasgow (not a Halloween event but there are spooky names on the line up including NIGHTMARES on Wax, The Haxan CLOAK and sevenDEATHS or the return of London’s Illuminations festival featuring a special performance from “godfather of gore” Fabio Frizzi and his Orchestra.

**The Ghost Walk That Absolutely Won't Scare You, But Will Be Ace Nonetheless

***'Horrornation Street’, Granada Studios, Manchester

*Fri Oct 31

There’s a chilling twist to the usual Coronation Street tour at Granada studios this weekend. As well as the chance to go trick or treating to residents’ houses a specially created ghost walk will follow the footsteps of the soap’s many murderers (sixteen characters have been bumped off this way since the soap started in 1960). Book in for Friday aka actual Halloween and get guided by one of the street’s most notorious - Richard Hillman, last seen drowning himself while trying to get rid of the entire Platt family.

**The Play To Shiver Your Timbers

*****Frankenstein @ the Bombed Out Church, Liverpool **

*Oct 31 - 1 Nov

Liverpool based theatre company Adenuf present their adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein (yes, you know the one) in the city’s spooky sounding St Luke’s ‘Bombed out’ church. While the play remains faithful to the original text writer/director Ian Carroll told magazine The Skinny that he’s left out a lot of the monster’s speech as to make it more frightening 'I wanted the monster to remain eerily in the background' he says 'The fright that he provokes by lurking in the shadows, the audience unfamiliar and uncertain - that’s what I wanted' mwah ha ha ha haaaaaa etc.

***The Four Quarters ‘Butchers Basement’ @ Four Quarters, London ***

Fri Oct 31 - Nov 1

***Psycho @ Union Chapel, London ***

Fri Oct 31

This new arcade bar has turned their basement into a Halloween cinema, complete with butchers tables and old band-saws (that’s dedication). While the films are kept secret they promise that both showings will be “the most fear inducing around” and not to expect a pleasant evening out. “It will be claustrophobic, dark and eerie” they say, noting that as an ex-butchers shop, there’s been a lot of death down there. If it all gets too much at least you can sneak upstairs for a soothing game of Pacman. For times and tickets

. Alternatively, if you fancy something ‘classic’ - there will be spooky drinks and more at a screening of Hitchcock’s Psycho at the usually lovely Union Chapel.

**The Outdoor Activity To Do Before Winter Really Comes

H****ainault Spooky Lantern Festival @ Hainault Forest

Fri Oct 31**

If the thought of a stuffy bloody basement makes you feel sick then try this outdoor event… where there is also a lot of blood. This popular event in Hainault Forest has you follow blood trails, avoid zombies and find monsters. Or you just re-inact the Blair Witch Project or something.
