The Other Art Fair

Old Truman Brewery, London

Oct 16 - 19

art

Beyonce and Jay Z continued their impeccably-dressed art tour of Europe this week with a visit to some East London galleries. While we’re not sure exactly where they were chaperoned, this weekend in East London there’s an alternative to Frieze with The Other Art Fair - an exhibition and showroom for over 100 emerging young artists at Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery in London. Work ranges from around £75 to the cool £1000’s and you can often talk to artists directly to find out more about their pieces. The adjoining Moniker Art Fair celebrates its fifth year of exhibiting at the same time, with what they say is the “premiere event for contemporary art with its roots embedded in urban culture”.

Gig

*DimSwn 2014, Various Venues, Cardiff *

Sat Oct 18

The yearly Swn festival (co-booked by BBCR1s Huw Stephens) is an annual fixture for anyone who loves new bands but has been cancelled for 2014 (boooo). However, thanks to local volunteers and kind partners, the people behind the festival have created Dim Swn, a day of brand new music across 7 great Cardiff venues. For just £24 pick your way through sounds including the classy electronica of Woman’s Hour, fuzzy, gloomy surf of The Wytches, ‘UK Haim’ Jagaara and the blues punk of Amazing Snakeheads. Get tickets here.

Move

Swingers LDN

London

Oct 17 - 19

Not a club for frustrated married people, but a “concept” (ew) brought to you by the ‘Institute of Competitive Socialising’. The Warehouse near Old Street in East London will feature a 9 hole crazy golf course, cocktail clubhouse, and DJs until 12.30am every night. As “competitive crazy golfing is well known for being one of the highest exertion sports and you’ll need some serious athlete food to be on top of your game” there will also be things to eat from Pizza Pilgrims, When Mac Met Cheese (pretty self explanatory), Patty and Bun, Hix Fishdogs and Buttermilk Chicken Burgers from Butchies. If it sounds like your thing visit

Feast

Chocolate Week

*Various UK Locations *

Oct 17-19

It’s chocolate week, which means there are a lot of events all over the UK dedicated to the dark sticky stuff. Ethical brand Divine has a whole load of events mapped out http://www.divinechocolate.com/uk/good-stuff/events while we like the sound of Glasgow’s No.1 chocolate factory’s masterclasses, where you can learn to make treats from scratch (costs £35). Also up north we’ve learned that Luxury Chocolate therapy exists http://www.savannahbeautycentre.com/treatments/luxury-body-treatments/ “as well as improving the appearance of cellulite & orange peel skin… the aroma of chocolate stimulates your senses releasing endorphins and leaving you in a really happy state” http://www.savannahbeautycentre.com/treatments/luxury-body-treatments/ while London is going all-out with chocolate demonstrations, the tasting room and a chocolate fashion show with dresses that hopefully won’t melt under those hot lights.

Club

Innervisions Weekender

Various Venues, Leeds & London

Fri Oct 17 - Oct 18

Record label and remixers Innervisions see London as their second home and, to celebrate another year in the capital have put on a series of events this weekend. The venues are only going to be announced on the day, but expect to see DJs including Ame and Dixon (regularly a DJ of the year for http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1968 for his use of melody, vocals and warmth) in some small, sweaty venues as well as at Fabric on Sunday afternoon as part of the super-club’s 15th Birthday. Some of the crew will also appear for Mono_cult at Canal Mills in Leeds for those up there. Don’t miss.

Watch

Northern Soul

Cinemas from Oct 17

Like films about music from the past? Nowhere Boy? Almost Famous? 24 Hour Party People? Then try Northern Soul, the story of a music and dance movement based in a love of US Motown and soul that took over small parts of the UK in the late 60s/early 70s. Although the plot is pretty predictable, sit back and enjoy the retro fashions, club scenes, choreography and (of course) the soundtrack. Check the trailer here.
