Good news for all fans of peppy electro-indie with plucky guitars that throw back to 80s Madonna and impossibly high-pitched vocals chanting indecipherable lyrics, because Grimes is back!
The Canadian singer-songwriter-genius has returned with REALiTi, which is certainly more danceable than other songs she’s released and is also ‘dreamy’, if you regularly dream of K-pop synths, hand-claps and a woman whispering prayers in your ear.
The video is pretty incredible, filmed in loads of different far eastern locations while Grimes toured there two years ago. It features a sort-of-ginger-y Grimes doing loads of elbowy dancing in some beautiful brightly-lit gardens, pavements and clubs. As far as those ‘band on tour’ videos that bands put out when they hate each other too much to make an actual video, it’s a lot less intentionally ‘isn’t this uplifting’ and more ‘shit she’s genuinely having a great time and so am I, what a great song’
The only problem with the track? It’s not actually going to be on Claire Boucher’s album. She uploaded the pretty high quality video on YouTube with this caption:
‘since this is no longer gonna be on the album, I’m releasing it as a special thank you to everyone in Singapore, KL, Manila, Jakarta, HK, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo who came out to the shows! It was an honor to play with a bunch of amazing bands and travel to places I would never otherwise be able to go ‘
Not to be naggy or anything but as much as we love this song, we kind of want Grimes to travel to her studio to make loads more songs like this and then travel to a venue near us to perform them. Please?
