You may or may not remember Jem and the Holograms. Maybe your older sister had the doll (with the flashing earrings!), or some old video tapes of the animated series lying around. Here’s the deal, by day, Jem was a professional lady by the name of Jerrica Benton, by night, the singer of Jem and the Holograms a sick all girl band with amazing hair and outfits. Think lots and lots of neon pink.

In addition to being world-famous rockers, Jem and her bandmates were constantly dodging sabotage by rival group The Misfits. A slew of merchandise flew around in the mid-80s and made every little girl want to form a band. So, not Barbie, basically.

Well, now the cartoon is being made into a live action movie! If we were excited for Sofia Coppola’s Little Mermaid, we are positively (well, figuratively) jumping for joy that Jem is coming to the big screen. Who will play Jem though? Maybe someone brand new, if director Jon M. Chu has anything to do with it (and he does) .

Chu and his producers have already started a social media campaign, announcing the movie via a YouTube video and even asking Jem fans to contribute to the creative process, from ‘writing music, to making costumes, to casting’. Yes, that means you can even submit a video audition to be in this movie.

Excuse us while we find the smelling salts, because this is too much excitement to handle. Then we might make our submission video.
