‘Girls Night In’ this V-Day can do one. Watching The Backup Plan and moping?* *Nope. For starters, don't ever watch The Backup Plan. It's a horror of a film.

If our coupled friends had a choice between hanging out with their friends this Valentines or sitting awkwardly in an overpriced restaurant surrounded by loads of other couples desperately trying to force a little romance over the whole affair, we bet we know which one they’d really prefer.

It’s the whole thing about why going on holiday with your mates is better than going with a boyfriend. A) your mates are more fun, and B) trying to force lovey-doveyness on a situation only leads to disappointment. So, rather than moping about your singledom this Valentines Day, celebrate your freedom with a big fat party round yours that has absolutely nothing to do with boys.

The Drink: Pour that Cosmo down the loo and *definitely *don't open that cherry Lambrini. Instead, drink something cool - Don Draper style like the Old Fashioned. We're fans of this recipe.

The Food: MEAT. Yeah you heard me, MEAT. Fat, red-blooded steak. Although, not steak ‘cos it’s too expensive to buy for a gathering-full of people. So instead, we’re going down the burger route. We want big ones. Stuffed with cheese. Yeah, we went there. This Simon Rimmer creation is perfect.

Ingredients

• 800g minced rump steak

• 200g Monterey Jack cheese, grated

• 4 brioche burger buns, sliced

• Sliced tomatoes, lettuce and gherkins

For the donkey sauce

• 1 head of garlic, cut across centre and roasted for 20 minutes

• 200g mayonnaise

• 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

• 2 tsp Tabasco sauce

• 2 tsp Dijon mustard

To serve

• Chunky chips

Method

  1. Season the meat well with salt and pepper and divide into 8 x 100g balls, then press out into equal burgers.

  2. Put 50g cheese in the centre of 4 of the patties, then put another burger on top and press all around the edges to seal.

  3. Either fry, grill or griddle the burgers for about 10 minutes until cooked through. The cheese will be very hot and gooey, so leave to stand for a minute or so before eating.

  4. To make the sauce, squeeze the cooked garlic into a bowl and mash until it forms a paste. Then mix in the mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and Dijon mustard.

  5. Layer up the burger in the bun with tomatoes, lettuce and gherkins. Then top with a good dollop of sauce. Serve with chunky chips.

The Music: Single Lady, Independent Woman; all off the menu. Instead, here’s bunch of cool ladies making fun pop music right now.

The Film: If we hear one peep about The Notebook we’ll be having words young lady. Instead, Gothika’s just arrived on Netflix and it’s trashy noughties horror at it’s best – WITH an ass-kicking female lead ta very much.
