If there's been a single runaway social media trend in 2015, it's been fitness. From a lexicon of new lingo - athleisure, fitspo - to a barrage of gym memes and every A-lister sharing their workout selfies, it really has been the year of getting sweaty. Heck, even your nan's probably training for Tough Mudder.

Cardlytics, the spending monitoring company, have shown that it's not all smoke and mirrors, either. Their research into our spending habits shows that more Britons are hitting the gym than ever before, with 44% of us now coughing up more for monthly and annual memberships.

Don't let the popularity of increasingly niche classes at boutique gyms fool you - it's actually been the cheapest and pay-as-you-go gyms that have seen the biggest increase in attendance.

Middle-tier gyms like Fitness First have noted a 22% increase, and top-tier gyms like Equinox have enjoyed a 14% boost, too.

That's not all - two weeks before joining, the average spend at health food stores had a whopping 55% increase, but so did the propensity to eat out more, which rose by 27%.

Well, those egg white omelettes don't make themselves, eh?
