We've had Cronuts (croissant-doughtnut hybrids), we've had Crownies (croissant-brownies), we've even had Bruffins (brownie–muffins). So can there be anything else left in the cake world to merge and turn into a trend?
Apparently the answer to that is ‘yes’ with the news of the invention of the Wonut - a waffle doughnut currently causing a stir amongst some foodie circles. The Wonut comes from Chicago and was invented by Alex Hernandez, owner of Waffles Cafe in Chicago, Illinois. Described as 'crunchy, cakey and sweet', Wonut flavours include green tea, red velvet, lemon poppy and Mexican chocolate. To make a Wonut you need patience – Hernandez says it takes about two hours to make a batch. Regular waffles are made on the grill and they are then deep-fried (like doughnuts) and dipped in different types of glaze including sugar, chocolate and marshmallow.
And there's more. Dominique Ansel, the inventor of the Cronut, has just announced his latest creation - the Waffogato, a waffle made out of ice cream and topped with a maple syrup espresso, which will be available at his New York bakery starting May 9. The vanilla ice cream 'waffle' is laced with Belgium waffle bits and set in a cup where warm, maple syrup espresso is poured on top. “It’s a little like a milkshake at the end,” Ansel has said. Ansel is the king of all food mashups who is famous for continually coming up with ever-more creative and fun new inventions and his Soho bakery has queues snaking round the block daily. We can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
