Almost more annoying than the whole rigmarole of dieting is figuring out what you can and can't eat.
By the time you've finished crafting creative meal options for "allowed" food three times a day, seven days a week, the whole shebang doesn't quite seem worth it.
Perhaps it's easier to begin by focusing on just one thing that's bad for you, and editing that out in a single fell swoop.
And according to a leading nutritionist, we should focus first on sweetened and fizzy juices.
These drinks, says Cara Anselmo, an outpatient dietitian at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, add needless sugar to your diet without the added benefit of making you feel full.
So, until you quit them, you'll find it difficult to make any in-roads to losing weight - no matter if you're swapping pasta for spiralised courgettes, or crisps for almonds, and so on.
"If you drink 500 calories of liquid versus eating 500 calories of food you’re going to feel much less satiated, which is one of the reasons soda and sweetened drinks are such horrible things. You don’t get a sense of fullness," Anselmo tells Business Insider.
The best possible start you can give your diet is to swap concentrated fruit juices and fizzy drinks for water.
That way, you don't squander your calories for no return. Save them for that doughnut, instead.
