A new study by Dove Dermaspa has found that over half of British women wouldn't recognise themselves naked. There goes that saying about knowing something as well as the back of your hand, eh?

Dove Dermaspa say the saddening results are down to women being 'disconnected to ourselves' - aka feeling so bummed out about our bodies that we don't even want to look in the mirror.

Given the often unrealistic standards of beauty that are prevalent in mainstream media, it's easy to see why we might not feel up to scratch.

“It’s not any woman’s fault that she relates to her body this way – being at odds with the body is exactly what our culture breeds and awareness is the first step forward,” said body connection expert, Liz DiAlto, in a statement from Dove Dermaspa.

Self-love is more than skin-deep. As DiAlto notes, appreciating your body in all it can do for you - move, run, climb, feel content after a particularly good cupcake, or totally at peace after a long soak in the tub - can help you break out of negative thought patterns.

"Having deeper appreciation for the entire self, not just the physical body, makes us feel better and possess a more positive energy," noted DiAlto. Hear hear.

You're more than what's in the mirror - but we reckon what's in the mirror is pretty fabulous, too.
