The eye-enhancing effects of plush, fluttery eyelashes cannot be overstated, so it's worth wising up on these teeny strands and the ways we can accelerate their growth rate.

If you're hoping to make the most of your mascara- or ditch the stuff altogether - follow these tips from RapidLashUK Brand Director Nadia Peacock on looking after your lashes.

1. Please tell us who are you and what do you do?

My name is Nadia Peacock, I am the UK Brand Director responsible for the RapidLash range of products in the UK. During the last seven years RapidLash has grown to achieve a must-have status with millions of satisfied customers worldwide, due to its highly advanced award-winning formula.

It is an exciting brand to be a part of, and we are currently working on the next innovation…

2. Enlighten us about eyelashes - are they hairs like the ones on our heads?

All hair grows in phases (three to be precise). But the cycles are very different - the lifecycle of an eyelash is approximately 60-90 days, whereas the hair on the head is between 2-7 years! They are very similar in structure, primarily formed of the protein keratin. And eyelashes are just as prone to damage as the hair on our heads!

3. What behaviours or genetic factors can cause eyelashes to fall out?

There are many factors that can weaken the eyelash structure, causing breakage, thinning, fading and premature fallout. These can include ageing, stress or medication. But the most common are our daily habits - such as misuse of eyelash curlers and incorrect removal of false eyelashes or eye make-up.

4. We love anything for a quick-fix, but are using heated lash curlers bad for the lashes?

Both standard and heated eyelash curlers are a great way to give an immediate boost to short, straight or limp lashes and to open up the eyes. I have no problem with occasional use, but as with most beauty tools, an incorrect or hurried technique may lead to damage. A gentle hand is the key!

5. What about eyelash extensions?

There has been a huge surge in the popularity of semi-permanent eyelash extensions, due to their high impact and low maintenance. I believe occasional use is fine. Potential damage to eyelashes is most likely to occur from incorrect fitting or removal, so always ensure these are carried out by a trained professional.

I always recommend using RapidLash® whilst wearing eyelash extensions, due to its blend of nourishing ingredients. Once extensions are removed, continued use of RapidLash® will help regain fuller-looking thicker-looking natural lashes without the need for extensions.

6. Could excessive mascara wearing be bad for the lashes?

Many women wear mascara daily with no problems, so the use of mascara per se is not bad for the lashes. But once again, it is the overly vigorous removal that will leave lashes more prone to damage. RapidShield is a brilliant product to add into your beauty routine to help protect, prime and refresh your eye lashes.

7. We do love a waterproof mascara, but what’s the best way to remove eye make-up so that we don’t pull out lashes?

Waterproof mascara is definitely one of the top beauty inventions! But due to its long-wearing nature it can often be more stubborn to remove. My top 3 tips for removing eye make-up are:

  1. Hold a soft cotton pad soaked in remover gently over eye for a few seconds to loosen make-up.
  1. Gently use the pad to ‘lift away’ all traces of eye make-up, with gentle patting or dabbing motions. Do not rub, tug or pull!
  1. Always remove eye make-up before bed. It is far too stubborn too remove gently by the morning and the stiffness of the mascara can break the lashes.

8. Is there anything we can eat to grow healthier lashes?

A healthy balanced diet will provide hair with the vitamins and minerals it needs for optimum condition. Particularly a wide range of protein sources (as hair is made of protein), such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, soy, legumes and nuts.

9. Can any product really make your lashes longer?

Only a medical product could claim to ‘grow’ eyelashes. However a cosmetic product can help to improve the overall appearance and condition of your eyelashes. The scientifically advanced and exclusive RapidLash® formula works to enhance the natural lifecycle of your eyelash (usually around 60-90 days), helping deliver fuller-looking and more healthier-looking lashes*.

10. What’s the one lash care tip every woman should know?

That’s easy - daily use of RapidLash® for a noticeable improvement in eyelashes in as little as 4 weeks!
