The Link Between Quinoa And A Longer Life

It's not just Gwyneth Paltrow who's waving the flag for quinoa. This week a study by Harvard Public School of Health found that this foodie favourite reduces the risk of premature death by 17% as well as being a great source of protein.

The extensive 14-year study of 367,000 people who ate the equivalent of a small bowl of quinoa every day (to be exact 34g for every 1000 calories of food), found that they had lower than average incidences of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. However, participants were eating considerably more than the sprinkling that you might add to your lunchtime salad - time to up your Ocado order.

If quinoa doesn't do it for your taste-buds, other whole grains such as porridge oats show similar benefits. But don't consider this the green light to go carb-crazy: refined 'white' carbs such as white bread and rice, don't have the same health benefits because the goodies within the grains have been broken down by processing.

The news is certainly going to add to already spiking quinoa sales. However, quinoa's new-found fame isn't without consequence. Demand for the grain, which is native to Peru and a traditional staple of the Peruvian diet, has pushed prices up meaning that the very Peruvians who first discovered it can't afford to eat it anymore. The short answer to a complicated problem? Support Peruvian communities by buying fair trade, organic quinoa.
