Whatever your relationship status, everyone knows that going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day is a mug’s game; a faux romantic hellscape of overpriced set menus, enforced prosecco and – horror of horrors – possibly being gifted a single red rose as 25 other identikit couples look on. So, skip the cringe factor of going out and hunker down at home with something tasty instead.

But this year Valentine’s night falls on a Sunday and really, who has the energy to concoct a gastronomic feast? Enter: the supermarket Valentine’s Meal Deal. Most of the big high street names are offering some kind of multi-course, fairly luxurious combination of shareable starter, fancy main and pudding this year – many of them with a bottle of fizz chucked in for good measure – and we’ve tried them all so you can pick your perfect match. Enjoy.

Review: Supermarket Valentine's Day Meal Deals

The best for generous portions: Waitrose

Lillian says, 'I really couldn't fault this meal deal. The lamb was tender and went perfectly with the mediterranean veggies and rosemary potatoes. It was all so flavoursome – even Heston's espresso martini chocolate tortes, which I usually am not keen on. Plus, the portion sizes are very generous, they'll definitely be some for left-overs the next day!'Starter: Breaded baking camembert Main: Twin rack of lamb with roasted garlic & rosemary heart buttersSides: Parmentier Potatoes & Mediterranean Roasting VegDessert: Heston 2 espresso martini chocolate tortesAlcohol: San Leo Nerello Mascalese Garganega

The best for a sweet tooth: Sainsbury's2 of 5

The best for classics: Sainsbury's

Anna says, 'You'd think Sainsbury's scallops wouldn't have a patch on fresh seafood ordered in a seaside restaurant. But the scallop gratin in this Valentine's meal deal is as good as any we've had by the sea. With a classic steak and chips for main it's hard to go wrong; this one is a generous size and juicy with a heart-shaped butter – there's a Plant Pioneers vegan steak option too. But the showstopper is the GU Zillionaire's Cheesecake, washed down with the bottle of wine that's part of the deal (or chocolate truffles for the non-drinkers). An unimaginative menu? Maybe a bit. But if it ain't broke, why change it? And for under £20 it's pretty good value for two.'

The best for treat to cash ratio and flexibility: Aldi3 of 5

The best for treat to cash ratio and flexibility: Aldi

Rhiannon says, 'When it comes to Aldi, what we love is that you always know that you're going to get a bargain in the truest sense of the word – that it'll be friendly on the wallet, but also taste great. When it comes to the Valentine's meals for two, it's no different. The steak meal for two comes in at less than a tenner (including a dessert), the cheapest offering is £3.73 per person – and this year they're even offering oysters for £3.99 a pack. The range has a great offering too if you've got a picky Valentine – there's fish, cheese, vegan, nuggets in the shape of hearts, duck, lamb and a load of steaks, some even Wagyu. All the pieces are sold separately (as opposed to a x, y and z for £20) so if your Valentine's has a sweet tooth, you could just get some chips and three desserts. We're not here to judge. We tried the sirloin steak with pink peppercorn butter (heart-shaped natch), triple cooked chips (YES, recommend) and the profiteroles (YES also recommend but you may want to keep all to yourself) all washed down by Aldi's signature reasonably-priced booze, in this case prosecco (it's Valentine's, treat yourself!) Delicious and a decent price, we can't promise we won't be back in to try out the other options – we've got our eye on the salmon en croute and mini pancakes next…'

Best for mixing and matching: Tesco4 of 5

Best for mixing and matching: Tesco

Georgia says, 'This year, the Tesco Finest Valentine's Meal Deal is even better value at £15. Select from a choice of starter, main, side, a vegetable accompaniment and dessert which all feed two, as well as a full-sized bottle of Tesco Finest Prosecco, wine, or non-alcoholic alternative.Choose from starters like Tesco Finest Salmon and Watercress Tart or Antipasti Platter, plus the ever-popular plant-based Wicked Kitchen Crispy Garlic M'shrooms. Mains include Tesco Finest Rump Steak, plant-based Wellingtons with sides such as creamy potato dauphinoise or triple cooked chips - the delicious list goes on!What we thought: The best thing about this deal is the abundance of options, particularly the plant-based additions to every course. We loved the Wicked Kitchen Wellingtons and garlic mushrooms, but of course - the chocolate brownie came out on top.'

Best for a bargain: Lidl5 of 5

Best for a bargain: Lidl

Rebecca says, 'Lidl's Valentine's range isn't part of a meal deal, but their Deluxe range is definitely worth casting an eye over before you settle on your Valentine's day meal. We went for the Salmon Wellington, which - intriguingly can be found in the freezer cabinet. Normally I'd be heading straight for the chilled food aisle when picking out a Valentine's Day treat, but let's face it, when popping out for a quick trip to the shops has become a luxury item in itself, discovering some really lovely frozen food has become a lockdown bonus. The food was delicious - as well as the salmon wellington, the range includes hassleback potatoes as a side, venison steaks, which, at £4.99 for two, are insanely well priced and probably deserve their own full-page ad in the paper, plus starters including mussels in a tomato and chorizo sauce and breaded camembert. We finished off with the lemon tart, which was also pretty amazing. As I said, this isn't part of a meal deal, but when prices start at £1.39 for beer-battered onion rings or dough balls, you'd barely notice the difference - leaving you with plenty of spare change for their brut champagne, which is currently reduced down to £9.99.'
