Remember Spar? They Do The Best Prosecco, Apparently

Corner shop bubbles for everyone

Spar Do The Best Prosecco

I don’t think I’ve ever spoken about prosecco so much in one year but, low and behold, the budget bubble game has been particularly strong in 2017. We’ve had blue prosecco, white wine prosecco and yes, even prosecco donuts. And while I might have mixed feelings about the necessity of toying with a drink which, if you ask me, is already perfect as is, it seems we can’t get enough of the stuff. In any shape or form.

In legitimately exciting prosecco news, though, a once beloved corner shop has just swooped on in to take the affordable alcohol crown. Spar (remember Spar?) has its own £12 prosecco, don’t you know. And it’s just been named the best own-brand bottle in the whole of the UK.

It’s called Valdobbiadene DOCG (try saying that after a few glasses) and was awarded 78 percent in theWhich? blind taste test. The independent panel of experts ranked Spar’s bottle of bubbles one percent higher than ASDA’s £6.50 Fillipo Sansovino and Waitrose’s £10.99 Dan Leo Brut NV which came in joint second scoring 77 percent. Yep, it outdid all of the bottles that have made big news this year, poor old Aldi came in bottom place with a rating of 66 percent. Surprised much?

The panel described Spar’s prosecco as having a ‘pleasant balance’, which the pretend wine connoisseur within me is way too happy to tell you, simply means that all of the various elements of the prosec (like the sweetness, the acidity, the alcohol level and other fancy wine stuff) are working well together. You can keep that tit-bit of information to wow your pals with at your next Christmas party.
