Guys. Something really, truly awful has happened.
No, Donald Trump hasn't pulled ahead in the polls and no Theresa May hasn't managed to pull off a sneaky blinder and implement Brexit overnight.
No, what's happened is (arguably) worse: we've been mugged off by a friend. That friend is Toblerone.
Eagle-eyed Reddit user Acid_Clown bought himself a Toblerone yesterday, something he was looking forward to very much. When he opened the packet, he found he was missing a couple of peaks.
This is what his Toblerone looked like.
This is what he was expecting it to look like.
To clarify, he says that 'Yes I ate a piece off the end before taking the photo, I needed sugar for the shock.' He also says that yes, that is a Papa Roach CD in the background which he would claim is his girlfriends but knows that no-one will believe him.
The problem seems to be that Toblerone's
although apparently the length of the bar remains similar if not the same so, if you didn't look closely at the weight advertised on the box, you wouldn't know you were getting less chocolate untill you opened it up and saw fewer peaks.
Commenters are not happy. 'What annoys me is the stealth aspect of all this shit,' Says UristMcD. 'If prices for ingredients are going up to make the food cost more, fair enough. But when you're cutting little dips and grooves and widening gaps between pieces in the food you're selling so it LOOKS THE SAME from the packaging, you're being a fucking liar.'
Other people chipped in with their own examples of other companies doing the same thing. Parrot of Doom bought this sandwich from Costa only to find that clever egg placement hid how few eggs he was actually getting.
User Me-tan suspected that sneakiness was an attempt to avoid the Marmite/Unilever/Tesco uproar of a few weeks ago. 'When Unilever tried to put their prices up, look what happened with the Tesco debacle. No doubt they will shrink their products instead because there's less resistance to it.'
Toblerone for their part have released the
, 'Toblerone remains one of the best value and most delicious Swiss chocolate products in the market. This is because we always work hard to ensure we offer value for money for our consumers, but like many other companies, we are experiencing higher costs for numerous ingredients. We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on-shelf, is affordable and retains the triangular shape, we have had to reduce the weight of just two of our bars in the UK, from the wider range of available Toblerone products.'
I just... I just.... why didn't they just make smaller boxes?
Thanks Brexit!
