Every Neighbourhood In Paris Is Getting A Sparkling Water Fountain, And It's The Chicest Thing

‘Still or sparkling?’ is a question you usually only have to consider at a restaurant or supermarket.

But in Paris, home of all things chic, you can now drink sparkling water from a water fountain.

Yes, really.

Every single neighbourhood in the city will have at least one sparkling water fountain, and many will be near parks and public spaces.

But the French government isn’t just installing sparkling water fountains to be chic – no, no, it’s actually for a good cause.

The project is called ‘Fontaine Pétillante’ and according to LA Times, the aim is to encourage people to drink more water and reduce plastic waste from water bottles.

‘People often told me that they were ready to drink tap water if it was carbonated,’ the head of the Paris water board, Anne le Strat, told French publication 20 Minutes in September.

‘Now they've got no excuse not to.’

Parisians aren’t the only ones that struggle to drink enough water, and free fountains will definitely help - however with recent reports warning that the bubbles in sparkling water can damage your teeth, dentists might not be too happy about this development.

Sparkling water is highly acidic, according to Dr Adam Thorne, founder of the Harley Street Dental Studio: ‘It’s pH3 on the acidity scale. The bubbles erode your tooth enamel – and over time this causes painful yellow cracked teeth,’ he told MailOnline.

This is not the first time Paris has dabbled in sparkling water experiments, the city has had eight sparkling water fountains in operation since 2010, and decided to install more following positive feedback from Parisians (quelle surprise).

Sparkling water is unquestionably the marmite of the beverage sector, but if it encourages bubble lovers to drink more water than they usually would – that’s a step in the right direction.

I know what you’re all thinking: surely a champagne fountain would go down much better? But it’s probably not so great for the health of the general public. Sob.
