‘Tis the season for hot chocolates sipped beside roaring fires, mulled wines guzzled at Christmas markets and one too many of grandma’s sherrys knocked back before falling asleep in front of an episode of Countdown. Yes my friends, it's bloody cold outside and the winter drinks menus are probably are exactly as you expect.
But where's the fun in that? You know what they say* - why limit yourself to seasonal beverages? A good cocktail is a good cocktail all year around and if you’re not quite ready to crack open the festively flavoured Baileys, or simply fancy something delightfully refreshing (if we may say so ourselves) then pull up a watermelon and give this concoction a whirl.
*We're not sure if 'they' say this. But we feel like it's a thing that definitely maybe could have been said.
You will need:
A watermelon (or two baby ones, because you know, they’re not really in season)
A bottle of Vodka (as cheap or pricey as you like. It makes little difference)
A lime or two (it adds a nice little tang)
And a few sprigs of fresh mint (because we’re grown-ups now, and grown-ups have flavoursome garnishes in their drinks)
A hand held blender (to mix it all up and make it nice and frothy)
The method:
It’s quite simple, actually...
-
Cut a hand held blender-size hole in the top of your watermelon and remove the top
-
Pour some vodka into the watermelon – measure at your discretion
-
Add a squeeze of lime
-
Pop the bladed end of the hand held blender into the watermelon hole and carefully (very carefully) blend on a low-ish setting until smooth and frothy
-
Then add a few sprigs of mint to garnish
… and voila. You’re basically a cocktail extraordinaire.
