Slow cookers (or crockpots) are pretty handy things and have had a bit of a comeback in recent years. Probably down to the fact they are totally foolproof. Even you can use one.

What many people don't know though is that they can also be very useful in getting you pissed. Here’s a Christmas Crocktail….

Slow Cooker Mulled Wine Recipe

Ingredients

1 Bottle of Red Wine (Nothing too sweet, Merlot is ideal)

Big Squeeze of Honey

5 Cloves

4 Cardamom Pods

2 Cinnamon Sticks

1 Star Anise

Grated Nutmeg (1/2 a teaspoon)

Juice of Half an Orange

Grated orange peel (1/2 a teaspoon)

Method

  1. Turn your slow cooker on low.

  2. Whack all the ingredients in.

  3. Give it a stir.

  4. Leave for at least 60 mins for the flavours to infuse.

  5. Stir and strain into your glass of choice.

  6. Garnish with a slice of orange

Optional

  • Try adding a small glass of something stronger… sherry, port, brandy or ginger wine just before serving for an extra kick. (whatever you have at the back of the cupboard)

  • Orange can be changed for lemon for a more zesty taste.

  • If you can’t be bothered to buy a whole pack of star anise just add some more cloves in.

  • Extra bonus: you can keep topping the slow cooker all day, and the low temperature cooking will mean you won’t burn all the alcoholic content away!
