Greggs are going ‘healthy.’ Kind of. Everyone’s favourite bakery chain are introducing two new ‘healthy’ pasties to their menu, by replacing the standard dough with sourdough.

Part of the bakeries new ‘Balanced Choice’ range, one is filled with chicken katsu, and the other with Bombay potato. Both come with a sourdough-based shortcrust pastry and are have a crumb topping. They contain less than 300 calories and up to two-thirds less fat and saturated fat than their standard, popular Steak Bake pasties – meaning they score green and amber rather than an unhealthy red on the Food Standards Agency ‘traffic light’ system.

According to Greggs' chief executive office, Roger Whiteside, their customers are 'increasingly looking for lower calorie and lower fat options,’ and they are even considering adding sushi to the menus one day. The move is part of a wider focus on brands to offer healthier options to their customers. The Guardian reported that by 2025 Britain will have the highest obesity levels among both men and women in Europe. And with brands like Pizza Express, McDonald's and Gregs switching up their menus the hope is people will pick the healthier option, over the grease.

Greg’s fan, and acting fashion and beauty editor Chemmie, pointed out ‘if I’m getting a pastry, I want the dough to be flaky, not sourdough - I'd eat something else if I wanted sourdough.’

We're all for healthier options here at The Debrief, but isn't the premises of the problem is that all these new healthy options are being displayed among unhealthy sweets and treats? The temptation of picking something slightly healthy is near impossible when it's sat next to an iced bun or fancy doughnut. While It’s definitely a step in the right direction, let’s face it, we don’t go to Gregs to eat a salad. Pass us the sausage roll. And we’re not the only ones who think so…
