If we’re honest, up until this week we thought daiquiris were for US college girls who headed off to Cabo on Spring Break – aka not all that sophisticated. Until that was – we went to a posh cocktail bar and the bartender insisted we had one. It was delicious. Problem is we’re short on cash and heading back to that bar isn’t an option this side of payday. So we called cocktail afficionado Giuseppe Gallo and asked him how to make one at home.
‘It’s a classic cocktail named after the beach of Daiquiri in Cuba,’ explains Giuseppe – bypassing the fact that the beach of Daiquiri looks like a very beautiful place that we would like to go to very much.
When we think of daiquiris it’s normally in the hand of some blonde girl in a pink bikini and it’s got the word ‘strawberry’ in front of it. Do strawberries make it tacky? ‘Purist or classic bar staff do prefer without fruits but you can make a summer or easy version by adding fresh berries.’ And what about if we don't have one of those little daiquiri glasses to serve it in? ‘A coupette,’ confirms Giuseppe. Yeah, one of those. What other glasses could we use without looking like total idiots? 'Any cocktail glass is fine – alternatively a champagne flute.’ So how do we make one then? ‘Take 3 parts Bacardi Rum, 1 part lime or lemon juice, 1/6 part sugar and some ice. Then place all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake hard for a minimum of 30 seconds.’ That all sounded a bit complicated to us so we also found this handy videoto explain it all too.
